This is a nostalgic collection of well known, American popular songs from the 30’s and and 40’s although the song, originally entitled “In other Words” and written by B Howard, just creeps in to the 50’s The compositions of Porter, Kern, Warren and others are given an arrangement based on the jazz piano style of Jonny Dyer with Vicki Swan on bass, Carol Anderson fiddle, Jacob Houghton guitar and Rik Parry, percussion.
The CD was recorded released in the autumn of 2020 by Wet Foot Music.
Hector’s latest folk C.D. “Gleanings” on the Wildgoose label, represents a small number of those songs which he has picked up and placed in the basket of memories and which range from Scots Traditional to contemporary singer/songwriter material. It includes two of his personal favourites previously recorded. One, Burns’s “A Rosebud by My Early Walk” a memory of Ayrshire days and childhood and “My Lagan Love” which so simply expresses the feelings of love and longing.
Hector’s fourth album with Wildgoose was released in 2014. Here, he returned to his Scottish roots with most of the songs coming from Scotland. Read the reviews here and album notes here. Days O’Grace features Vicki Swan and Jonny Dyer with Moira Craig.
Selkie was originally produced in cassette format at WildGoose Studios. It was later remastered and issued as a CD on the same label. Praised in the Folk Press, it is a compilation of Celtic flavoured traditional and contemporary folk ballads. Selkie is also the title of the duo of Hector and his long term singing partner Liz Thomson from Newtonmore, Highlands.
Ayrshire born, Hector has a particular affinity for the works of The Bard. The Lea Rig features an eighteen track selection of the songs of Robert Burns, performed by Selkie (Hector and Liz Thomson), with two bonus pipe tracks by Chris Thomson, Liz’s son. At the time he was a member of The Strathclyde Police Pipe Band.
Named after his boyhood home, Hector’s album Ingleneuk is a personal selection of songs associated with friends and places encountered along the way. Hector is supported on this recording by the talented folk duo Vicki Swan and Jonny Dyer, along with contributions from Steve Poole and Paul Sartin.
